In conclusion, composition test that use by teacher in
measure of student’s writing skill has certain strengths and also weaknesses.
It will be interested if the teachers combine both of composition and objective
test in measure student’s writing skill to reduce the disadvantages above
Composition Test
The teachers who want to measure
their student’s writing skill by composition test would be focus on student’s
writing. Most of language teachers more often give students the composition
test than objective test because of some reasons. Yet, all language teachers
are surely aware, there has in the past fifty years been much criticism of the
conventional composition test on part of measurement of student’s writing
skill. The composition test has certain advantages; however, it also has some
disadvantages in measure of student’s writing skill.
The most interest form of
measurement student’s writing skill is composition test. It has certain
advantages in measure student’s writing skill. First, it requires students to
organize their own answer which is expressed in their own words. Thus
composition test measures certain writing skill such as skill to organize,
relate, and weigh of materials. Second, composition test motivates students to
improve their writing; conversely, if the examinations don’t require writing,
many students will neglect the development of this skill. Finally, composition
test is much easier and quicker to be prepared than objective test, an
important advantage to the busy classroom teacher.
Moreover, composition test not only
has certain advantages, but also it has some disadvantages in measure student’s
writing skill. First, composition test is unreliable measures because students perform
differently on several topics and on different occasions, and the scoring of
compositions is by nature highly subjective. Second, in writing compositions,
students can cover up weakness by avoiding problems such as the use of certain
grammatical patterns and lexical items. Finally, composition test requires much
more scoring times than objective test; for this reason, compositions add
greatly to the expense and administrative problems of large scale testing.
In conclusion, composition test that
use by teachers in measure of student’s writing skill has certain strengths and
also weaknesses. It will be interested if the teachers combine both of
composition and objective test in measure student’s writing skill to reduce the
disadvantages above.
